About Us

A Brief History of Egmond aan Zee

Egmond aan Zee was founded around the year 977 as a fishing village on the North Sea coast. Its location made it both prosperous and vulnerable. Over the centuries, severe storms and coastal erosion took their toll — destroying homes, churches, and even the original lighthouse. Notable floods in 1570 and 1741 caused major damage, but the village was rebuilt each time.

Fishing remained the core of daily life well into the 20th century. However, both World Wars brought hardship. During World War I, naval mines claimed several fishing vessels. In World War II, the German occupation led to restricted fishing, forced evacuations, and the construction of bunkers along the coast — some of which still remain today. Many fishermen never returned.

Today, Egmond aan Zee is a peaceful seaside town known for its wide beaches, lighthouse, and dune landscapes. The village’s maritime roots and wartime history are still visible — in its monuments, museums, and the stories passed down through generations.
